A request from Hybla Valley in the cards below was a Maytag whose gas burner would only light with a lighter, with no clicking at all. No click means no spark is reaching that burner. If the other knobs still make the igniters click, the module is probably fine and the switch behind that one knob is the likely part.
Heavy daily cooking wears burner switches and igniters faster, and boil-overs foul the ports. Clean the burner and dry it fully after a spill; water in a switch can stop the clicking or make it click nonstop.
On electric ranges, a coil that stays cold is the coil, the receptacle or the infinite switch. A coil that glows only in one spot or crackles is close to failing.
Lighting a burner with a match is fine as a stopgap if it catches right away, but if gas flows for a while before it lights, turn it off. If you smell gas, get everyone out and call your gas company or 911 from outside.
Glass smooth-top cooktops are common in Woodbridge's townhouses and remodeled kitchens, and their zones wear with use. The element, its switch and the wiring terminal behind it are the usual failures, and all three are routine.
Heavy pots slid across the glass leave scratches, and a dropped pot can crack it. A cracked top should be switched off at the breaker until it's replaced.
Gas cooktops need clean, dry burners. After a boil-over, remove the caps and heads, clear the ports with a pin and let everything dry before lighting.
Induction is less common here but turning up in remodels. Induction problems often turn out to be the wrong pan or blocked airflow underneath; a real fault usually shows up as an error code.
When a dual-ring radiant zone heats unevenly, with one ring glowing and the other dark, the element has a broken coil or the switch isn't feeding both rings.

Appliance Surgeon charges $75 for the diagnostic visit, or $115 for a double unit (such as a double wall oven, washer-dryer combo or stacked laundry), and the fee is credited toward the repair if you approve the quote. Labor starts at $200 and stays there on about 9 in 10 repairs; more complex jobs can reach $450. Parts are extra and listed in the quote. Igniters, spark switches and burner elements are usually quick, economical fixes; gas valves and smooth-top control panels cost more. Diagnosis names the part, the quote comes before the repair, and a burner stuck on high is always treated as urgent. Typical price ranges by appliance are in our appliance repair cost guide.
Common calls include burner not lighting, weak flame, electric burner not heating, clicking igniter, control knob problems and uneven heat. The exact cause is confirmed during diagnosis. On cooktops, common calls include cooktop not heating, burner not igniting, induction error code, cracked glass concern, weak burner output and switch failure.
As a short-term workaround, lighting it promptly with a long lighter is acceptable, but don't let gas run before lighting. The missing spark is usually the switch behind that knob or the spark module. The Hybla Valley Maytag request we list had this issue.
The element is breaking down inside and arcing. Stop using that burner and replace the coil. Check the receptacle too, since an arcing coil can burn it.
Let it cool, then use a cooktop cleaner and a soft pad. For cooked-on spots, a razor scraper held flat works. Avoid abrasive powders and scouring pads. Sugary spills are the exception: scrape them off promptly and carefully, before they cool and pit the glass.
Usually the infinite switch for that zone. It controls how much power the element gets, and when it fails, the zone may heat only at full power or not at all. It's an inexpensive part.
You can safely check that the burner caps sit correctly, the igniter area is clean and dry, and the breaker is on. Anything involving gas valves or internal wiring should wait for a technician - and a burner stuck on high should be treated as urgent, not tinkered with. On an induction cooktop, also make sure the cookware is induction-compatible; that alone explains many dead zones.
