Two requests in the cards below came from just over the line toward Alexandria. One was a KitchenAid with a leaking gas regulator. The other was a range whose gas burner wouldn't light properly.
A gas smell from the range is the most serious thing a stove can do. Don't use it or touch switches. Get everyone out of the house and call Washington Gas or 911 from outside. A leaking regulator or connection gets repaired after the gas company has made things safe.
A burner that won't light properly is far more ordinary. Boil-overs clog the ports, cleaning knocks the cap off center, and igniters wear. Clean the ports with a pin, dry the burner and seat the cap flat. If it still won't light, the igniter or the spark module is next.
On electric ranges, a dead element is usually the element itself, the receptacle or the infinite switch.
Freestanding ranges also need their anti-tip bracket. If you pull the range out to clean behind it, make sure the back foot hooks into the bracket again when it goes back.
Cracked glass can't be patched. On many models the glass comes as a complete top with the elements attached, and on some it costs a large share of a new cooktop.
Stop using a cracked top in the meantime. Spills can get through the crack to the elements and wiring, and the crack can spread with heat.
A zone that won't heat on an intact top is usually the element or its switch. A zone that won't turn off is almost always the switch.
Gas cooktops mostly need ignition parts. Before calling, clean the burner ports and make sure the caps sit flat.
Smooth-tops have a hot-surface light that stays on until the glass cools. If that light stays on when the cooktop is cold, or never comes on, the indicator or the limiter for that zone needs checking.
Induction shows up mostly in remodeled Springfield kitchens. Its usual faults are a pan the cooktop won't detect, a cooling fan problem or a failed board.

Many stove repairs are completed in a single visit once the technician has diagnosed the fault and confirmed the parts on hand. If a specific part has to be ordered, we schedule a short return visit to finish the job.
Appliance Surgeon charges $75 for the diagnostic visit, or $115 for a double unit (such as a double wall oven, washer-dryer combo or stacked laundry), and the fee is credited toward the repair if you approve the quote. Labor starts at $200 and stays there on about 9 in 10 repairs; more complex jobs can reach $450. Parts are extra and listed in the quote. Igniters, spark switches and burner elements are usually quick, economical fixes; gas valves and smooth-top control panels cost more. Diagnosis names the part, the quote comes before the repair, and a burner stuck on high is always treated as urgent. Typical price ranges by appliance are in our appliance repair cost guide.
Common calls include burner not lighting, weak flame, electric burner not heating, clicking igniter, control knob problems and uneven heat. The exact cause is confirmed during diagnosis. On cooktops, common calls include cooktop not heating, burner not igniting, induction error code, cracked glass concern, weak burner output and switch failure.
Call Washington Gas or 911 first, from outside the house. They'll check for a leak and make it safe. Once they have, we can repair the range, including the regulator, valves and connections inside the appliance.
Clogged burner ports or a cap that isn't seated. Clean the ports with a pin or a stiff brush, let the burner dry and seat the cap. If the flame is still uneven or yellow, the burner may be cracked or the orifice may need cleaning.
It depends on the model. On some cooktops the top assembly is a modest share of the price of a new one; on others it costs nearly as much. We'll look up the part for your model and give you both numbers before you decide.
Usually a heavy pot dropped on it, or a sudden temperature change, like a hot pan set on a cold, wet spot. Sugary spills are the other risk: manufacturers say to scrape them off right away, carefully, because they can pit the glass as they cool.
You can safely check that the burner caps sit correctly, the igniter area is clean and dry, and the breaker is on. Anything involving gas valves or internal wiring should wait for a technician - and a burner stuck on high should be treated as urgent, not tinkered with. On an induction cooktop, also make sure the cookware is induction-compatible; that alone explains many dead zones.
