Oven Not Heating or Heating Unevenly? Causes and Fixes
Ovens tend to fail at the worst possible moment because the worst possible moment is when they get used hardest: holiday season. The encouraging news is that ovens are mechanically simple, their common failures announce themselves distinctly, and a couple of checks with the power off will usually tell you which conversation you are having.
Electric ovens: look at the bake element
The bake element, the exposed loop at the oven floor on many models, should glow evenly cherry-red a few minutes into preheat. Blisters, breaks, sagging or a section that stays dark mean it has failed, which is one of the most routine oven repairs there is. With power off at the breaker, a visual inspection is safe; replacement involves the rear panel and connectors and sits at the easy end of professional work. If broiling works but baking does not, or the reverse, the corresponding element is the prime suspect. Note that many newer ranges hide the bake element beneath the oven floor, where its condition cannot be checked visually and diagnosis needs a meter.
Gas ovens: the igniter tells the story
A gas oven that clicks or glows but never lights, takes many minutes to light, or lights only sometimes almost always has a weak igniter. The igniter must draw enough current to open the gas safety valve; as it ages it glows but no longer pulls its weight, and the valve stays shut, by design. Watch through the door during preheat: an igniter that glows for more than about 90 seconds without ignition is finished. Because this dance involves the gas safety system, replacement belongs to a technician.
Runs but never reaches temperature: the sensor
The thin probe in the oven's upper rear corner reports temperature to the control. As sensors drift, the oven runs cool or overshoots, and bake times stop matching recipes. Test with an inexpensive standalone oven thermometer at 350°F: a reading off by more than about 25 degrees points to the sensor or calibration. Many controls allow a calibration offset of 25 to 35 degrees, a settings-menu fix worth trying; beyond that, the sensor is a modest part replacement.
Uneven baking: airflow, seals and habits
One side burning while the other lags is an airflow and heat-loss problem. In convection ovens, listen for the fan; a failed convection motor turns a precision oven into an uneven one overnight. Check the door gasket for tears and the door for a firm close, since heat pouring out one edge unbalances everything. Then audit habits: oversized trays that block circulation, dark pans on one rack and light on another, and crowding all produce "uneven oven" complaints with a healthy oven.
Controls, fuses and the strange failures
An oven that is completely dead, shows scrambled displays, or drops out mid-cycle points at the control board, a thermal fuse or house-side power. These are meter diagnoses, and board-level problems especially are worth confirming before parts money is spent, since boards are among the pricier oven components.
When to call
Book service for any gas ignition problem, for element and sensor replacement, for a dead control, or whenever the oven trips a breaker. Before the visit, note the symptom pattern, the model number and how far off the thermometer reads; those three details usually let the repair finish in one trip.
