Some of Arlington's newer buildings have induction cooktops, while older condos and many houses have radiant glass or gas. Induction faults look different from the others: a zone that won't recognize a pan, a zone that shuts off mid-boil, or a touch panel that stops responding.
Before calling about induction, try a flat-bottomed pan that a magnet sticks to firmly, and wipe the touch panel dry, since water on the controls can lock them. If a zone keeps cutting out, check that the vent under the cooktop isn't blocked by a drawer or by things stored in the cabinet.
Radiant cooktops are simpler. A dead zone is the element or its control, and a cracked top should not be used. Gas cooktops mostly need igniters, burner switches or the spark module.
A request shown below from Lincolnia, near Alexandria, was a built-in GE Profile gas cooktop that stopped working altogether. When every burner quits at once, the spark module or the power supply to the cooktop is a better bet than four igniters failing on the same day.

Radiant elements and switches replace economically from below the glass; induction boards and pro-style gas parts run higher. After diagnosis you get one clear quote - along with honest advice when cracked glass makes replacement the smarter spend. The diagnostic visit is $75 for a single appliance or $115 for a double unit (such as a double wall oven, washer-dryer combo or stacked laundry), and the fee is credited toward the repair if you approve the quote. Labor starts at $200 and stays there on about 9 in 10 repairs; more complex jobs can reach $450. Parts are extra and listed in the quote. Typical price ranges by appliance are in our appliance repair cost guide.
Common calls include cooktop not heating, burner not igniting, induction error code, cracked glass concern, weak burner output and switch failure. The exact cause is confirmed during diagnosis.
Check the pan first. Induction needs a magnetic base, so if a magnet doesn't hold firmly on the bottom, the cooktop can't sense it. Warped or very small pans can also go undetected. If good pans fail on one zone only, that zone's coil or board needs testing.
Wipe the panel completely dry and check whether the child lock is on, since the lock symbol is easy to miss. Switching the breaker off for a minute resets many models. If the panel is still dead, the touch control board may have failed.
Safe checks: confirm the breaker, and on induction models make sure the cookware is actually induction-compatible - that alone explains many dead zones. Replacing elements or boards under the glass is precision work best left to a technician.
