Colchester notes
Colchester refrigerators and the defrost cycle
Colchester began in 1753 as a tobacco port on the Occoquan, and almost nothing of the old town remains apart from the Fairfax Arms. Today it's a quiet stretch of homes off Old Colchester Road, a short drive from Lorton.
A Whirlpool from Huntington, in the requests on this page, built up ice on the back wall of the freezer until the fan grew loud and both sections warmed and beeped. Frost-free refrigerators melt that frost on a schedule. When the heater, its thermostat or the control fails, the ice keeps growing until it blocks the air and the fan blades start striking it.
A GE from the Mount Vernon area struggled to hold temperature in both sections as well. When that happens without visible frost, the evaporator fan, the condenser fan, the start relay or the compressor is the more likely cause.
If your house is on a private well rather than Fairfax Water, sediment can clog the screen in the fridge's water inlet valve, and a slow ice maker on well water is often that screen.
