Microwave repair in D.C.

A Shaw request shown below was a GE microwave whose handle was coming away from the door. It sounds cosmetic, but the handle is part of how the door latches. A loose handle can keep the door from closing fully, and then the door switches won't let the microwave run.

The door latch, its switches and the handle mounts sit behind most door complaints. They're inexpensive, and replacing them restores the safety interlock as well as the handle.

In tight rowhouse galleys, the microwave is often an over-the-range unit or a drawer under the counter. Both are worth repairing for most faults, since a replacement has to fit the same opening.

If the microwave runs but doesn't heat, leave the case closed. The high-voltage capacitor inside can stay charged after the unit is unplugged.

A drawer microwave adds one more moving part: the motorized drawer. If it stalls partway, look for crumbs or a utensil in the track and don't force it, since the motor and gears are what open it.

Frequently asked questions

Microwave Repair in Washington, DC FAQ

Can someone come fix my microwave today in Washington, DC?

We're based in Alexandria, about 7 miles from Washington, DC. Same-day and next-day appointments are available when the technician route has open windows; call or book online for the earliest option. Appointments cost the same on weekdays, evenings and weekends - our hours run 8 AM to 10 PM Monday through Saturday and 10 AM to 10 PM on Sunday, all at one standard rate.

Many microwave repairs are completed in a single visit once the technician has diagnosed the fault and confirmed the parts on hand. If a specific part has to be ordered, we schedule a short return visit to finish the job.

How much does it cost to fix a microwave in Washington, DC?

Appliance Surgeon charges $75 for the diagnostic visit, or $115 for a double unit (such as a double wall oven, washer-dryer combo or stacked laundry), and the fee is credited toward the repair if you approve the quote. Labor starts at $200 and stays there on about 9 in 10 repairs; more complex jobs can reach $450. Parts are extra and listed in the quote. Door switches and diodes are inexpensive; a magnetron costs more but usually still beats replacing a built-in unit and matching the cabinetry. We quote after diagnosis, before any work - and the high-voltage interior is exactly why this is never a do-it-yourself estimate. Typical price ranges by appliance are in our appliance repair cost guide.

What microwave problems do you fix in Washington, DC?

Online microwave repair requests from Washington, DC have been for door problems. Common calls include microwave not heating, turntable not moving, sparking inside, door switch failure, control panel issue and unusual noise. The exact cause is confirmed during diagnosis.

The handle on my microwave door is loose. Can that be fixed?

Usually. Handles are held by screws or clips inside the door, and the door may need to come apart to reach them. If the loose handle has affected the latch, we check the latch and door switches too.

My microwave runs but the food stays cold. What failed?

Usually the magnetron, the high-voltage diode or capacitor, or a fuse on that circuit. Sometimes a door switch is involved. These parts are tested with the power off and the capacitor discharged.

Should I try to fix the microwave myself first?

Only two checks are safe: the outlet and breaker, and whether the door closes fully. Stop there - the high-voltage capacitor inside holds a dangerous charge even when the microwave is unplugged, which is why this is the one appliance we tell everyone never to open.
