GE Refrigerator Ice Maker Not Working: Fixes and Resets
GE refrigerators, including the Profile and Café lines common across D.C.-area kitchens, make reliable ice until one of a short list of things interrupts them. Find the actual switch
GE hides the off switch in different places by generation: a toggle or slide on the ice maker body itself, a setting in the door display on newer models, and on many classic units simply the metal feeler arm, where arm up means off. During a grocery reshuffle it takes one nudge to switch production off without anyone noticing. Confirm the switch or menu setting is on and the feeler arm swings freely and rests down, then allow several hours; even a healthy GE ice maker only produces a tray or two per cycle.
The filter GE units are picky about
GE recommends replacing the water filter, typically the MWF family, every six months, and their ice makers are often the first appliance to complain when flow drops. Small, hollow or sparse cubes in the weeks before a full stop are the classic sign. Replace the filter with the OEM part, since poorly fitting generics cause both leaks and starvation, run a couple of quarts through the dispenser to purge air, and give it a day.
Door-mounted ice makers: the fill tube quirk
Many GE French-door models make ice in a compartment inside the fresh-food door. That clever placement has a known weak point: the narrow fill path can ice over, so water never reaches the mold, or the compartment's seal loosens and frost slowly entombs the works. If your door compartment shows frost buildup or the mold sits bone dry, defrosting the area, unit unplugged, door open, a towel below, restores production temporarily; recurring icing there is a repair visit, because the durable fix involves the fill system and seals rather than a hair dryer subscription.
Listen for the fill
Once or twice per cycle you should hear the brief buzz of the water valve energizing behind the fridge. Silence at fill time, with supply and filter confirmed good, points at the dual inlet valve, a very common and moderately priced GE part. An overflowing slab of fused ice in the mold points the other way, at a valve that no longer closes cleanly. Either way, the valve is a normal single-visit repair.
Resets, and when the module is done
A soft reset, unplugging the refrigerator for two minutes, clears occasional control hiccups after power events. Some GE ice makers also restart their cycle when the feeler arm is cycled down after service. When the mold fills and freezes but cubes never eject, or the unit runs through motions without producing, the ice maker module's motor or heater has usually failed, and on GE units the practical fix is swapping the ice maker assembly, quick work with the right part in hand.
When to book
Book service when ice production does not return within a day of the checks above, when the fill tube or door compartment keeps icing, when the valve never buzzes, or when cubes freeze but never drop.
