Chillum dryers: gas, heat and venting
A Maytag in a Georgetown request smelled of gas, and its roof vent connection needed cleaning. Those can be two separate problems, and the gas smell always comes first: if you notice one, leave the house and call Washington Gas or 911 from outside before anything else is checked.
Roof vents, like that one, are harder to inspect than a vent through a wall. A screen or bird guard on the cap traps lint, which is why screens aren't allowed on dryer vent caps.
Gas dryers turn up in many of Chillum's single-family houses. When one tumbles without heating, the igniter, the flame sensor, the gas valve coils or a thermal fuse is the usual part.
The flexible duct behind the dryer should be metal, not plastic or vinyl, and only as long as the space needs. Duct crushed behind the machine is a frequent reason drying slows.
