Samsung facts

What to know about Samsung appliances

Who makes Samsung

Samsung appliances are made by Samsung Electronics of South Korea, which holds a large share of the US refrigerator and laundry market. Samsung opened a washer plant in Newberry, South Carolina, in 2018, and many of its US washers come from there; refrigerators, dryers, dishwashers, ranges and microwaves are generally built at Samsung plants in other countries. Samsung has also owned Dacor, the California luxury cooking and refrigeration brand, since 2016.

What tends to fail

Samsung French-door refrigerators are a frequent call, and the ice maker leads the list: ice that freezes into a block, a slow or stalled maker, or water that leaks from the ice room. Frost on the evaporator with a fan that grinds against it is another, usually a defrost or sealing issue rather than a bad fan. Twin-cooling models can run warm in the fresh-food section while the freezer is fine. The repair involves clearing the ice, testing the defrost circuit and sensors, and replacing the maker, heater or board that failed.

Samsung dishwashers tend to come in with drain faults, where the pump, the sensor in the sump or a clogged case break is the cause, and with leak-sensor trips from a small drip in the base. Front-load washers need drain pumps, door locks and, later in life, bearings or a spider arm; top-loaders come in for unbalance, suspension and drain issues. Dryers mostly fail at the heating element, thermal cutoff, idler or rollers. Ranges come in for igniters, elements and boards, and over-the-range microwaves for door switches or a control pad.

Parts

Samsung parts come through Samsung's US parts network and a small number of distributors. Ice makers, pumps, elements and sensors are generally available quickly; boards, door assemblies and sealed-system parts may need to be ordered, and some redesigned ice-maker kits are specific to a model range. The technician confirms the exact part against the full model number and quotes it before anything is ordered.

Finding the model number

Samsung puts the tag inside the fresh-food compartment of a refrigerator, usually on the left wall near the top. Washers carry it on the back or inside the door jamb; dryers inside the door; dishwashers on the side or top edge of the door; ranges on the frame behind the oven door or inside the drawer; over-the-range microwaves inside the door frame. Samsung model numbers often begin with RF, RS, WF, WA, DV, DW or NE, which tells us the product type before the visit.

Error codes

Samsung displays codes on most of its appliances, including refrigerators. Our pages cover Samsung refrigerator codes, washer codes, dryer codes and dishwasher codes; the blog goes into the 5C drain code and a Samsung fridge that is not cooling in more detail. Save the code before you power-cycle the unit and give it to us when you book; the technician verifies the cause with tests rather than from the code alone.

Ice makers on French-door models

The in-fridge ice maker on many Samsung French-door models is the single most common reason owners call us. Symptoms are frost around the ice room, a bucket that will not pull out, or ice that stops altogether. The fix ranges from defrosting and resealing the ice room to fitting an updated ice-maker assembly, and the technician checks which applies before quoting. Keeping the ice room sealed and the maker clear of frost is the best way to make the repair last.

Samsung-specific patterns

The Samsung faults we are called for most, and what fixes them

Samsung refrigerators, washers and dryers share a handful of well-documented failure patterns. Knowing them lets us arrive with the right parts and quote accurately on the first visit.

French-door ice maker freezing up

Frost around the ice-maker compartment, slushy or hollow ice, and a fan grinding against ice are the signature complaint on many Samsung French-door models. The cause is warm air leaking into the ice room. The lasting repair is Samsung's updated ice-maker assembly and the sealing kit for the compartment, fitted together; defrosting alone brings the problem back within weeks.

Fresh-food section warm, freezer fine

Usually the evaporator cover behind the back panel has iced over so the fan cannot move air. We clear it, then find the reason: a defrost sensor, heater or control fault, or a torn gasket. Repeated icing after a repair points to the sensor or board.

Display shows 88 88, OF OF or blinking temperatures

88 88 after a power event is a communication fault between the display and main board; OF OF is demo (cooling-off) mode and is cleared from the panel; blinking temperatures mean the unit is out of range. We check the boards, wiring and door switches rather than replacing parts on the code alone.

Washer UE/UB, 4C, 5C, dC and nd codes

UE/UB is an unbalanced load or worn suspension rods; 4C is water supply (valves, screens or house pressure); 5C and nd are drain faults, most often a clogged pump filter or a failed drain pump; dC means the door or lid did not lock. Each is confirmed hands-on before a part is quoted.

Dryer not heating or HE / tS codes

Electric Samsung dryers lose heat through a failed element or thermal cut-off, often because the vent run is restricted. We test the element, thermistor and vent airflow, and replace the cut-off together with clearing the restriction so it does not fail again.

Compressor and sealed system

Samsung refrigerators use a digital inverter compressor, and Samsung advertises a 10-year parts warranty on it for many models (labor is not covered after the first year). If the fault is the compressor itself we tell you so you can pursue the parts coverage; most Samsung cooling complaints are defrost or fan problems, not the compressor.

Samsung parts and model numbers

Samsung parts are model-specific, so the full model number (for example RF28R7351SR or WF45T6000AW) and the manufacturing date on the label help us bring the correct ice maker, pump or board. The label is inside the refrigerator on the left wall, inside the washer door frame and inside the dryer door opening. Share it when you book online. Frequently asked questions

Samsung repair questions

Who makes Samsung appliances?

Samsung Electronics, headquartered in South Korea. Washers for the US market have been built in Newberry, South Carolina, since 2018; other Samsung appliances come from the company's plants abroad. Samsung also owns Dacor.

Do you repair Samsung appliances?

Appliance Surgeon repairs out-of-warranty Samsung refrigerators, freezers, washers, dryers, dishwashers, ranges and ovens, cooktops and over-the-range microwaves in DC, Northern Virginia and suburban Maryland. We are an independent repair company and not a Samsung warranty servicer.

How much does Samsung appliance repair cost?

Appliance Surgeon charges $75 for the diagnostic visit on a Samsung appliance, or $115 for a double unit (such as a double wall oven, washer-dryer combo or stacked laundry), and the fee is credited toward the repair if you approve the quote. For appliance repairs, labor starts at $200 and stays there on about 9 in 10 repairs; more complex jobs can reach $450. Parts are extra and listed in the quote. Typical price ranges by appliance are in our appliance repair cost guide.

Do you offer same-day Samsung repair?

We fit same-day visits in when the route has an opening and otherwise book next-day. Hours are 8 AM to 10 PM Monday to Saturday and 10 AM to 10 PM on Sunday; an early call to (771) 222-7117 helps.

Where is the model number on a Samsung appliance?

Inside the fresh-food compartment on a refrigerator, on the back or in the door jamb of a washer, inside the dryer door, on the dishwasher door edge, behind the oven door on a range and inside the microwave door frame. Send a photo if you can.

Can you help with a Samsung error code?

Give us the code, which appliance shows it, and whether it comes back after a reset. Our Samsung code pages explain the common ones, and the technician confirms the fault with tests on site before ordering any part.

Do you service Samsung appliances under manufacturer warranty?

Samsung's warranty work goes through Samsung's authorised service network, which we are not part of. We repair units once the manufacturer's warranty has ended, and we can diagnose a covered unit if you want an independent view before you call Samsung.

Is my Samsung appliance worth repairing?

Usually, for an ice maker, pump, element, lock or sensor on a unit with some years left in it. A compressor or a sealed-system leak on an older refrigerator is where it gets marginal, and the technician walks you through the comparison before you commit.

What happens if a special part is needed?

The technician explains which part it is, how long it should take and what it costs, and we order it only after you approve. If a part is on backorder or discontinued, we tell you and talk through the choices.

Are repairs covered by a warranty?

Every Appliance Surgeon repair is covered by a 90-day warranty on parts and labor, starting the day the repair is finished. The technician explains the terms before the job is complete.
