Samsung Dishwasher Not Draining: 5C Code Fixes
Samsung dishwashers report a drain failure with a small family of codes, 5C, 5E or SC depending on the display generation, all meaning the same thing: the machine tried to pump water out and could not confirm it left. Standing water in the tub comes along for the ride. The causes line up in a short, checkable order.
Step 1: The filter assembly
Remove the lower rack, twist out the cylindrical filter at the tub floor and rinse both the fine and coarse parts under hot water. Samsung filters trap seeds, labels and glass fragments efficiently, which is the point, and a loaded filter is the leading cause of this code. Refit it fully seated; a loose filter can re-trigger the fault on its own.
Step 2: The drain hose and the sink connection
Pull the unit forward enough to see the drain hose: no kinks, and a high loop rising toward the counter before it reaches the sink drain or disposal. If the dishwasher is a recent install and has drained poorly from day one, check the garbage disposal inlet for the knockout plug that must be removed at installation; it is the most common brand-new-dishwasher failure in existence. Also run the disposal for ten seconds, since a full disposal blocks the dishwasher's exit.
Step 3: The pump check and the reset
With the filter out, sponge the sump dry and check the accessible impeller area for debris, wearing a cloth against glass. Then restore power after a two-minute breaker-off reset and run a short cycle. A 5C that returns with a clean filter, clear hose and open sink path points at the drain pump itself or, less often, the sensor that verifies water level; both are standard single-visit repairs on this brand, and both are meter diagnoses rather than guesses.
The variant worth mentioning when you book
Water that appears in the tub between cycles, rather than failing to leave after one, is a different fault, typically a check valve or inlet issue, and it changes what the technician brings. Say which pattern you see.
