Who makes Miele

Miele is a family-owned German company headquartered in Gutersloh, and most of its appliances are built in its own German plants rather than by contract manufacturers (vacuums are the exception). In the United States, parts and factory service run through Miele USA in Princeton, New Jersey. The line sold here includes dishwashers, compact washers and dryers, refrigeration and wine units, wall ovens, steam and speed ovens, cooktops and range hoods.

What tends to fail

Miele dishwashers most often come in with the intake/drain indicator lit: a clogged triple filter, a blocked drain hose, a tired drain pump or a stuck non-return valve are the usual causes. Circulation pumps, heater relays and the waterproof float switch in the base are the next tier. On washers the frequent repairs are door locks, drain pumps, shock absorbers and inlet valves, and on dryers it is lint buildup inside the heat-pump exchanger, condensate pumps and moisture sensors.

Miele ovens and steam ovens tend to need door hinges, control modules and, for steam models, work on the water path when descaling has been skipped. Refrigerators and wine units come in for fan motors, gaskets and control faults more than anything else. Many Miele faults are logged in the appliance's memory, so the technician reads the stored fault history where the model allows it, then confirms the cause by testing before any part is quoted.

Parts

Miele parts for the US market come from Miele USA in Princeton, New Jersey, and many of them are sold only to Miele itself or to its dealers. Filters, pumps, valves, hoses, locks and hinges can usually be sourced, while some control modules and model-specific assemblies are restricted. The technician checks the full model number and the serial against the parts listing, tells you whether the part is one we can obtain, and gives you the price in writing before it is ordered. Where a part is Miele-only, we say so.

Finding the model number

Miele dishwashers carry the data plate on the top or right edge of the door, visible when the door is open. Washers usually have it inside the door ring or on the door frame, dryers inside the door opening, and ovens on the frame once the door is opened. Refrigerators and wine units have it inside on a wall, and cooktops underneath or on the paperwork. Miele model names are short, often a letter and four digits, so a photo of the plate avoids confusion between similar models.

Error codes

Miele shows faults as F codes on models with a display and as indicator lights on simpler ones. When a repair needs Miele

Some Miele repairs are better placed with the manufacturer: parts that Miele sells only through its own service, programming that needs factory tooling, and units still under warranty.
