Who makes Amana

Amana was a separate company until Maytag bought it in 2001, and it passed to Whirlpool Corporation when Whirlpool bought Maytag in 2006. It is now Whirlpool's budget-to-midrange line for laundry, refrigeration and cooking, and newer Amana washers, dryers, refrigerators and ranges are generally built on the same platforms as entry-level Whirlpool models. Parts go through Whirlpool's channels, so an Amana part number is often identical to the Whirlpool one.

What tends to fail

Amana dryers usually come in for a drum that stops turning while the motor hums, which is nearly always a broken belt or a seized idler pulley, or for a dryer that runs cold because the thermal fuse or heating element has gone. Amana washers typically arrive with a lid switch or lid lock fault, a drain pump clogged with debris, a worn motor coupler on older direct-drive models, or suspension rods that let the tub knock on spin. Amana refrigerators and freezers most often need a defrost thermostat or heater when frost builds on the back wall and the fresh-food side warms, an evaporator fan when the unit goes quiet and warm, a start relay when the compressor clicks but does not run, or a new door gasket. Ranges tend to need a bake element, an oven igniter or a temperature sensor, and dishwashers a drain pump or door latch. These are generally modest parts, and most repairs are finished in one visit when the part is on the truck.

Parts

Genuine Amana parts are distributed through Whirlpool, and for current models the belt, fuse, pump or thermostat is usually the same Whirlpool part and readily available, frequently from stock. Parts for Amana appliances made before the Maytag purchase came from a different company and are harder to find; some have been discontinued. The technician verifies the part number from the full model tag during the visit and lists it in the written quote so there are no surprises when it is ordered.

Finding the model number

Amana dryers usually have the tag inside the door opening, on the frame you see when the door is open. Top-load washers carry it under the lid or on the rear of the cabinet; front-load washers inside the door rim. On refrigerators and freezers it is generally on the inside wall of the fresh-food section or, on a chest freezer, on the outside back or side. Ranges put it under the cooktop lid, inside the storage drawer or on the oven door frame, and dishwashers on the door edge. A phone photo is enough.

Error codes

Only the newer electronic Amana models show codes; many older units have mechanical timers and no display at all. Where a code does appear, it usually follows the Whirlpool F and E format, so our Whirlpool pages for washers, dryers, dishwashers and ranges give a reasonable guide, with the caveat that codes change by model. Amana heating and air conditioning

The Amana name is also used on furnaces, heat pumps and air conditioners, which are a separate business from the kitchen and laundry appliances and not something we work on.
