Bosch Dishwasher E24 and E25 Errors: What They Mean and How to Fix Them
Bosch dishwashers are quiet, precise and, when drainage goes wrong, wonderfully specific: E24 and E25 both mean "I cannot drain," but they point at different places in the drain path. Between the two codes and a fifteen-minute inspection, most owners can either fix the problem at the sink or know exactly what the repair visit is for.
What the two codes mean
E24 is the general drain fault: water is not leaving fast enough, with the usual suspects being the filter, the drain hose and the connection under the sink. E25 narrows the accusation to the drain pump area, most often a blocked impeller or a pump cover that is not seated. Standing water in the tub after a cycle accompanies both.
Fix 1: The filter, and the twist people miss
Remove the lower rack, twist the cylindrical filter counterclockwise and lift out both the mesh cylinder and the flat coarse filter. Rinse everything under hot water. Here is the Bosch-specific detail: when refitting, the filter must be twisted firmly back until it locks, with the arrows aligned. A filter left unlocked is itself a known trigger for E24, so the "I just cleaned it and now I have the error" story usually ends here.
Fix 2: The pump impeller behind the little cover
For E25, go one layer deeper. With the filter out, sponge out the standing water and you will see a small round pump cover at the bottom of the sump. Unclip it carefully and check the impeller for the classic culprits: a shard of glass, an olive pit, a plastic lid fragment. Wear a cloth or glove, since glass finds fingers. The impeller should spin freely with light resistance. Refit the cover until it clicks, and run a rinse cycle.
Fix 3: The hose and the famous installation miss
Behind or under the machine, the drain hose should rise in a high loop before reaching the sink drain or disposal, with no kinks from the unit being pushed hard against the cabinet. And if the dishwasher is newly installed and has thrown E24 from day one, check the connection at the garbage disposal: the disposal's dishwasher inlet ships with a knockout plug that must be removed at installation. A surprising number of brand-new Bosch "failures" are that plug, still in place, blocking every drop.
Fix 4: The reset, once
After any of the above, clear the code by holding the Start button for about three to five seconds (model-dependent) or by powering the unit off at the breaker for a minute. One reset after a fix is diagnosis; repeated resets without a fix are just rehearsing the same failure.
When it is a part, not a clog
E24 or E25 that returns with a clean filter, free impeller and clear hose points at the drain pump itself, a stuck check valve, or, less often, control-side issues. Pump replacement on a Bosch is routine work for a technician who handles the brand, and it beats living with a dishwasher that needs bailing. Water that appears in the tub between cycles, rather than failing to leave after one, is a different fault, an inlet or check-valve problem worth mentioning distinctly when you book.
