Who makes Sub-Zero
Sub-Zero is made by Sub-Zero Group, a family-owned company in Madison, Wisconsin. The same company owns Wolf, its cooking brand, and Cove. Sub-Zero builds refrigeration only: built-in and integrated refrigerators and freezers, column units, undercounter drawers, wine storage and ice makers. Many models run two separate compressors, one for the refrigerator and one for the freezer, which is the main thing that sets the brand apart from a standard refrigerator.
What tends to fail
On a Sub-Zero refrigerator the most frequent call is warm temperatures with the unit running constantly, and the cause is often a condenser coil packed with dust behind the top or bottom grille. Many models light a service or vacuum condenser indicator when that happens. Evaporator fan motors, defrost heaters and defrost thermostats are also regular repairs; the symptom there tends to be frost on the back wall of the freezer, or a refrigerator that drifts warm while the freezer stays cold.
Because many units have two compressors, one side can fail while the other keeps working, so a warm refrigerator with a cold freezer does not mean the whole unit is finished. Door gaskets wear on the heavy doors and let moisture in, ice makers stop when a water valve or the maker itself fails, and on older units a sealed-system leak or a tired compressor is possible. The repair usually starts with cleaning the condenser and checking temperatures and fan operation before any part is named.
Parts
Genuine Sub-Zero parts come through Sub-Zero Group's own parts distribution, and some items are sold only through its dealer channel. Common wear parts such as gaskets, fan motors, water valves and condenser fan assemblies can usually be had within a few days; compressors, control boards and sealed-system parts tend to take longer. The technician reads the full model and serial number on site, confirms the part against it and puts the part price in the written quote before anything is ordered.
Finding the model number
On most Sub-Zero refrigerators the rating tag is inside the refrigerator compartment, usually near the top of a side wall or on the ceiling, and on some units it sits behind the lower grille or the top grille. Undercounter drawers and wine units often carry the tag inside the door or drawer frame. The number is also on the original paperwork. Send it with a photo of the tag when you book so parts for your exact model can be checked before the visit.
Error codes
Newer Sub-Zero units show an error code or a service message on the display, while older ones use lights and a wrench icon. Built-in and panel-ready units
Most Sub-Zero refrigerators are built in or finished with custom cabinet panels, and the technician needs to know the layout before the visit: whether the unit is a side-by-side, a column, an over-and-under or an undercounter drawer, whether it has custom panels, and whether the grille is at the top or the bottom. Some repairs require pulling the unit forward, which needs clear floor space in front of it. Moving fragile items away and sending a photo of the installation helps the appointment go faster.

For appliance repairs, labor starts at $200 and stays there on about 9 in 10 repairs; more complex jobs can reach $450. Parts are extra and listed in the quote. Often it is. What happens if a special part is needed?
