Who makes Maytag

Maytag has been a Whirlpool Corporation brand since 2006, when Whirlpool bought the Maytag company along with its Amana, Jenn-Air and Admiral lines. Today the name goes on residential laundry, Maytag Commercial laundry, and kitchen appliances such as refrigerators, dishwashers and ranges. Current Maytag machines are generally built on Whirlpool platforms, so their controls and many of their parts are shared with Whirlpool-branded models of the same generation.

What tends to fail

Laundry accounts for most Maytag calls. A top-load washer that sits on Sensing and never fills, drains slowly or shakes the floor on spin usually has a lid lock, drain pump, actuator or suspension problem; a front-loader that will not unlock or drain tends to need a door lock or pump. Maytag dryers that tumble without heat usually have a failed thermal fuse, heating element or gas igniter, and a loud rumble is most often worn drum rollers or an idler pulley. These are straightforward part replacements once the technician has confirmed the cause.

In the kitchen, Maytag refrigerators come in for defrost heaters and thermostats, evaporator fan motors, ice makers and water valves, with a sealed-system leak the one fault that is often not worth fixing. Dishwashers tend to need drain pumps, wash motors, door latches and the occasional control board. Ranges and cooktops mostly need oven igniters, bake or broil elements, temperature sensors and surface burner switches. Microwave calls are usually a door switch, diode or magnetron, which we take on only where the unit can be serviced safely.

Parts

Because Maytag belongs to Whirlpool, genuine parts come through Whirlpool's parts network and are often the same part numbers used on Whirlpool and Amana machines. Laundry parts are generally easy to get, and the common ones are often on the truck; refrigerator and range boards may take a few days, and some parts for Maytag models made before 2006 are no longer produced. The technician confirms the part against the full model number and lists it in the quote before anything is ordered.

Finding the model number

Most Maytag top-load washers have the tag under the lid, along the rim of the cabinet, or on the back panel; front-load washers and dryers carry it inside the door opening. On refrigerators look on the inside wall of the fresh-food section, often near the top or behind a crisper drawer. Dishwashers have the tag on the door edge, ranges inside the storage drawer or under the lift-up cooktop, and microwaves inside the door frame. A clear photo of the tag is the easiest way to send it.

Error codes

Maytag displays use F and E codes that vary from model to model, and the same code can mean different things on a washer and a dishwasher. Older Maytag machines

Maytag washers and dryers built before the 2006 sale used Maytag's own designs, and many are still running. They can usually be repaired as long as the part exists, though some belts, transmissions and timers for them have been discontinued, so the technician checks availability before quoting.
