LG Washer Error Codes Explained: UE, OE, IE and LE
LG washers are chatty in a useful way: when something goes wrong, the display usually names the failing subsystem in two letters. Learning the four most common codes turns a mystery into a short checklist, and it tells you before anyone visits whether you are facing a habit, a clog or a part. Here are UE, OE, IE and LE, in the order homeowners meet them.
UE and uE: the load will not balance
Lowercase uE means the machine noticed imbalance and is trying to fix it by tumbling and adding water; capital UE means it tried and gave up. One waterlogged blanket, a single pair of jeans, or sneakers create exactly this. Redistribute the load, add a few towels to a small load, and retry. If UE appears on every sensible load, check that the washer sits level and all four feet touch the floor firmly with locknuts tightened; a rocking machine can never balance. Persistent UE on a level machine with normal loads points at worn suspension components, which is a repair visit.
OE: water cannot leave
OE is a drain timeout. Start with the drain pump filter behind the small front access door: towels down, drain the reserve hose, unscrew the filter and clear the coins and lint. OE that returns with a clean filter and clear hose usually means the drain pump itself is failing, a common and reasonably priced LG repair.
IE: water cannot get in
IE is the mirror image, a fill timeout. Confirm both water taps are fully open and the fill hoses are not kinked. Then shut the taps, disconnect the hoses at the washer, and check the small inlet screens for sediment, a frequent finding in the D.C. area's older housing stock. Weak household pressure shows up here too. If the screens are clean and pressure is fine, the inlet valve assembly is the likely part.
LE: the motor is locked or overloaded
LE reports that LG's direct-drive motor could not turn as commanded. An overstuffed drum triggers it honestly: remove half the load, unplug the machine for a few minutes to reset, and retry. LE that appears on modest loads points at the motor's hall (position) sensor or related components, the signature repair of the direct-drive platform. It is very fixable, and precisely the kind of diagnosis worth confirming with a meter rather than by ordering parts on a guess.
The codes around the edges
You may also meet dE (door not latched, check for trapped fabric and the latch), FE (overfilled, usually a valve or sensor issue, stop and book), tE (temperature sensor) and PE (water-level pressure sensor). The pattern holds: one honest occurrence after an odd load or a power blip deserves a reset; a code that returns is a component naming itself.

Call for repair when a code survives the matching check and a single reset, when UE persists on a level machine, when OE returns with a clean filter, or for any FE.
