Who makes KitchenAid
KitchenAid has been owned by Whirlpool Corporation since 1986 and is generally positioned above the Whirlpool brand in the company's lineup, covering dishwashers, refrigerators, wall ovens, ranges, cooktops, microwaves, range hoods and trash compactors. The appliances are engineered and supported through Whirlpool, so many internal parts are shared with Whirlpool, Maytag and JennAir models. KitchenAid stand mixers are made by Whirlpool as well, but they are small countertop appliances and not something we service.
What tends to fail
KitchenAid dishwashers are the KitchenAid repair we see most often. The usual complaints are water left in the tub, a blinking Clean light, poor washing and a door that will not latch, which point to the drain pump, the control board, the wash motor or sump assembly and the latch respectively. Repairs mean pulling the unit forward, replacing the part and running a test cycle. If the Clean light is flashing, our post on a KitchenAid Clean light blinking explains the sequence before you call.
French-door and built-in KitchenAid refrigerators tend to come in for ice makers, evaporator fan motors, defrost faults and water valves, and models with two evaporators can need a damper or a thermistor when one compartment drifts. Wall ovens and ranges most often need a bake element, an igniter, a door lock motor, a convection fan or a relay board when the oven will not heat or will not unlock. Induction and glass cooktops bring in power boards and cracked glass, while range hoods mostly need a fan motor or a switch and compactors a drive or a safety switch.
Parts
KitchenAid parts are supplied through Whirlpool's parts channel, and a good share of them carry the same part numbers as the Whirlpool or JennAir equivalent. Dishwasher pumps, latches and oven elements are normally quick to get; built-in refrigerator boards, induction generators and glass cooktop tops are more often special order and can take longer. The technician matches the part to the full model number on site, and the quote shows the part before it is ordered.
Finding the model number
On a KitchenAid dishwasher the tag is on the edge of the door, visible when it is open. Refrigerators have it inside the fresh-food compartment, usually on the upper left wall or ceiling; built-in models sometimes put it behind the top grille. Wall ovens carry the tag on the frame behind the door, ranges under the cooktop or inside the drawer, cooktops on the underside or on a label under a burner, microwaves inside the door, hoods behind the grease filters and compactors inside the drawer frame. Photograph it and send it with the booking.
Error codes
KitchenAid ovens and dishwashers show F and E codes, and newer dishwashers signal faults by flashing the Clean or Start light a set number of times rather than showing text. The meaning depends on the model, so send us the code or the flash count when you book. Since KitchenAid controls come from Whirlpool, our Whirlpool dishwasher code list and Whirlpool range and oven code list show the common pattern, and the technician checks the code against the service sheet for your model.
Stand mixers and small appliances
KitchenAid is as well known for its stand mixers, blenders and food processors as for its kitchen appliances, and those come up often when people call. We do not repair countertop products of any brand; our work is on the built-in and freestanding appliances listed above. For a mixer, KitchenAid's own customer service is the right place to ask.
