Dishwasher Not Cleaning Dishes? 7 Fixes Before You Call
A dishwasher that runs its full cycle and returns gritty glasses and greasy plates has not necessarily failed; more often it has been quietly handicapped. Cleaning power depends on four things arriving together, hot water, pressure, chemistry and coverage, and each has a fix you can do tonight. Work the seven below in order; most machines recover before the list ends.
1. Open the spray arm ports
Spin each spray arm by hand and inspect the little holes along it. Hard-water minerals and food debris plug them steadily, and blocked ports mean whole zones of the rack get rinsed, not washed. Pop the arms off per your manual and clear each port with a toothpick or wire, then rinse the arms through.
2. Clean the filter you forgot exists
Modern dishwashers are quiet because they filter instead of grinding, and that filter needs monthly attention: twist it out of the tub floor and wash both elements under hot water. A loaded filter recirculates dirty water over your dishes, which is exactly the gritty-film result that prompted this article.
3. Prime with genuinely hot water
Run the kitchen tap until it is fully hot before starting the machine, so the first fill is not cold. Detergent chemistry and grease removal both collapse below proper wash temperatures, and this free habit fixes more "weak" dishwashers than any part.
4. Audit the chemistry
Detergent absorbs humidity and dies in the box; use fresh product, dosed for our moderately hard regional water, and refill the rinse aid, which is doing more for drying and spotting than most people credit. White film on everything is usually mineral scale, and a citric-acid dishwasher cleaner run empty strips it.
5. Load for water, not Tetris
Nothing blocks the spray arms' rotation, tall items go where they do not shadow the rest, and bowls face the spray. Run a cycle half-loaded once as a test: if half-loads clean well, coverage and loading were the whole story.
6. Check what arrives and what leaves
Weak fill pressure from a clogged inlet screen starves the wash, and poor draining leaves last night's water in the sump; standing water afterward points to the drain-side guides on our blog.
7. Then suspect the machine
Survived all six? The remaining suspects are a weakening wash pump, a failed heater keeping water tepid, error-history faults like those in our error-code guide, or a worn spray arm bearing. All are meter-and-experience diagnoses and routine repairs.
When to book
Book when hot-primed, clean-filtered, well-loaded cycles still fail, or when the machine no longer gets audibly hot. Appliance Surgeon provides dishwasher repair across the D.C. metro, including Springfield and Oxon Hill.
