What’s Your Dishwasher Trying to Tell You? A Guide to Common Error Codes

Modern dishwashers are equipped with smart diagnostic systems that can tell you when something is wrong. When a problem occurs, a cryptic error code will flash on the display, stopping the cycle in its tracks. While these codes can be confusing, they provide valuable clues about the issue.

What Are Error Codes?

Error codes are signals from your dishwasher’s internal computer. They correspond to a specific malfunction, such as a drainage problem, a heating issue, or a leak. Your owner’s manual is the best place to find a list of codes specific to your model, but some issues are common across all brands.

Common Codes for Major Brands

  • Bosch (E15): This code almost always indicates that the anti-flood system has been activated, meaning there is water in the base pan of the dishwasher. This is a sign of an internal leak.
  • GE (Ftd or C4): This stands for “Failure to Drain.” It means the dishwasher was unable to pump out all the water from the previous cycle, likely due to a clog in the drain hose, filter, or garbage disposal connection.
  • Samsung (LC): The “Leakage Check” code is similar to Bosch’s E15. It signals that the machine’s sensors have detected moisture where it shouldn’t be.
  • Whirlpool / KitchenAid (F9 E1): This code points to a drainage problem that is preventing the dishwasher from emptying properly.

What to Do When You See an Error Code

  1. Try a Reset: The first step is to try resetting the dishwasher’s computer. You can do this by turning it off at the circuit breaker for five minutes. Sometimes, this can clear a temporary glitch.
  2. Check for Simple Fixes: If you get a drainage error, check the dishwasher filter at the bottom of the tub for food debris. Also, if you recently installed a new garbage disposal, make sure the knockout plug was removed from the dishwasher connection port.
  3. Don’t Ignore Recurring Codes: If a code comes back after a reset, it means there is a genuine hardware problem that needs to be addressed.

Let the Experts Decode the Problem
